A5. Management of anemia in Gynecology and Obstetrics

Welcome to the Management of Anemia in Gynecology and Obstetrics course!

AWGE: Anemia Working Group Spain, is a multidisciplinary group for the study of anemia related to medical-surgical patients, founded in 2005 by anesthesiologists, hematologists, intensivists , surgeons and biochemists.

Although the prevalence of anemia in women and in pregnancy is common, it is usually underestimated and undertreated. Knowledge of anemia and especially its consequences has improved in recent years. We know that anemia and iron deficiency influence not only quality of life, but also academic and work performance, and can favor infections, therefore, it has important socioeconomic consequences.

Women today are concerned not only with health, but also with well-being, being able to lead a more active life, which is why they demand greater sensitivity in this field. In recent years, new high-performance treatments have appeared, such as high-molecular-weight intravenous irons that allow the entire necessary dose to be administered in a single administration with a high degree of safety, which clearly improves the efficacy and comfort of the treatment. .

We know that anemia in pregnancy poses risks to both the mother and the baby, and these new treatments reduce postpartum anemia and allow a faster recovery, avoiding many transfusions.

The WHO recommends since 2010 the application of "Patient Blood Management" programs that allow the adequacy of the transfusion to avoid morbidity and mortality related to over-transfusion. The treatment of anemia is the first pillar of these programs. Therefore, research and development of clinical guidelines in this field is increasing considerably.

In Spain, few centers have Clinical Practice Guidelines for the treatment of anemia in gynecology and obstetrics. It is an area that is beginning to concern gynecologists and obstetricians, both in primary and hospital care. Some specialized congresses are beginning to talk about the subject, but to our knowledge, there is no refresher monographic course on the treatment of anemia in this field, which reviews the available evidence and provides algorithms, practical clinical cases and has a comprehensive approach. multidisciplinary The vision of experts in the management of anemia in other fields and the participation of leaders in the development of national and international guidelines, makes it especially attractive.

This course is aimed primarily at gynecologists and obstetricians, anesthesiologists and primary care physicians.
