Welcome to the Second Online Edition of the Lung and Thymus Cytology Course!

Pulmonary pathology has had a remarkable progress in recent years based on several factors, fundamentally:
- Reclassification of lung neoplastic pathology, particularly neuroendocrine tumors.
- Emergence of new treatments, "personalized", derived from a varied gene expression, related in turn with different cytohistological subtypes.
- Development of new diagnostic techniques capable of providing cytological material susceptible to diagnostic and prognostic evaluation, with the appropriate techniques.
- Emergence of new inflammatory and functional entities, susceptible to cytological study. We can affirm today that the microbiological diagnosis is essential for the determination of the etiologic agent and the establishment of an adequate antimicrobial treatment.

In addition, the immunocytochemistry performed in the exfoliative cytological material or in the punctures, allows the typing of the different lung neoplasms without the absolute need for bronchial biopsy.
